Cities and Towns

Ketchikan, Alaska - Creek Street
Alaskans and Alaska’s communities are friendly and welcoming. This is one reason why many visitors fall in love with Alaska.
Most communities in Alaska are classic small American towns, where people know each other. With Alaskans having a strong sense of neighborhood and civic duty it is no surprise that many Alaskan cities and towns have been recognized as All-American Cities by the National Civic League.
With a population of under 1 million spread out over a huge expanse two times larger than Texas there are many towns and only three major cities - Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau, the State Capital.
Many of Alaska’s communities are port and harbor towns where people make their living by commercial or sport fishing or in the travel industry. Some parts of these seaside towns are actually built on the water such as the Creek Street area of Ketchikan in Alaska’s Inside Passage. There are some incredibly scenic oceanside towns throughout Alaska, but the Inside Passage towns are probably best known because they are ports-of-call for the major cruise lines.
